University of Costa Rica (San Pedro Avenue and Flag Roundabout, San José): foreigners who pass through San José are fascinated with this university campus, since it is a virtual biological and natural reserve. Tropical birds, plants and insects can be found easily adjacent to campus buildings. There are also gardens and trails on campus. Those interested in interacting with students and faculty can go to the square (a.k.a. “El Pretil”), which is a popular meeting place. This is also considered the most prestigious university in the country, with a solid academic program, and among former students, such as the former president of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias.
